Policies for all FLE students
English Placement Test
- All undergraduate NC State students with a score of 590 or below on the paper-based TOEFL or 243 or below on the computer-based TOEFL or 96 or below on the iBT must take the English Placement Test at the beginning of their first semester of study.
- International graduate students must take the test if required by their departments. Contact your department or the Graduate School for information.
- Required English classes must be taken in the first semester of study.
- Students who are required to take more than one English class must take at least one class each semester until their English requirements are met.
- Students who are not required to take FLE classes may take any FLE class they believe would benefit them.
Special policies for Graduate Students
- Graduate students must take 9 hours each semester in order to be registered. A class exceeding the required 9 hours may be taken for a grade of AUDIT and is exempt from tuition charges.
- Students taking courses for a grade of AUDIT must register for the class, attend, and do all the work, as if they were taking the class for a grade. A grade of AUDIT will only be awarded for successful completion of the requirements of the course.
- Unsuccessful Auditors will receive a grade of NR and will be required to repeat the course.
Special policies and information for Undergraduate Students
- Students may be required to take FLE 100 prior to enrolling in FLE 101.
- FLE 101 is available for non-native speakers of English.

Visiting Scholars and Sitting in on a Class
- Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures policy does not permit unregistered students in FLE classes. Visiting scholars usually do not have a visa status that allows registration for classes. For more information, contact the Office of International Scholar and Student Services at 515-2961.
