German Study Abroad Opportunities
1. Vienna Summer Program
Our faculty member Dr. Kube leads the study abroad program in Vienna every summer. The program runs for about 5 weeks and offers German instruction at any level. Search the Study Abroad Office database of programs for the city of "Vienna" or contact Dr. Kube, lkube@ncsu.edu. This program does NOT fuffil the German Studies Major study abroad requirement. However, it can be a terrific first step, to get your feet wet with study abroad, or can be used to do two courses for the German minor, or just to get ahead with learning German.
2. UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg Semester Exchange Program
The UNC System has a wonderful exchange program with the university system of the south German state of Baden-Württemberg: all of our students can study at any university in Baden-Württemberg: Freiburg, Heidelberg, Hohenheim, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Tübingen and Ulm. What's very attractive about this program: a free 4 week intensive German course before the semester starts! Also: there are options for both advanced students (FLG 202 required) and for students with no or just basic German skills. Here is the list of UNC-EP programs you can choose from:
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Freiburg
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Heidelberg
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Hohenheim
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Karlsruhe
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Konstanz
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Tübingen
UNC-EP Baden-Württemberg in Ulm
And the homepages of these universities are listed here:
Universität Freiburg
Universität Heidelberg
Universität Hohenheim
Universität Karlsruhe
Universität Konstanz
Universität Mannheim
Universität Stuttgart
Universität Tübingen
Universität Ulm
Dr. Braunbeck is the local UNC-EP representative, has lots more information, and can help you select a good place to go.
Universität Mannheim is so far the only university that runs on a semester system that is similar to our semester times at NC State. All the other universities have a fall semester that runs mid October to mid February and a summer semester mid-April to mid-July. Therefore, Mannheim is the only true option for a fall semester study abroad, while a spring/summer semester abroad gives you a full choice among the listed universities.
3. Study Abroad Office
Search the database of the NC State Study Abroad Office for other opportunities: http://studyabroad.ncsu.edu/ and visit the office. Many possibilities are available through the national organization ISEP and other national organizations that facilitate study abroad for students..
To find programs on the Study Abroad Website click on Programs (top left), then select a country and desired length of study.
4. Goethe Institute
The German government sponsored German language and culture institute has locations all over the world for teaching German language and culture. Their German language courses are immersion courses and offer great instruction and good value. We are not yet sure if transfer credits for this are possible (ask Dr. Braunbeck) but the courses can be highly recommended for advancing your German language and intercultural skills, especially the locations in Germany. Our German Club faculty advisor, Ralph Jones, has experience with them and can you tell more (click on German club on the right for his contact info). And you can check out the Goethe institute here:
