Latin American Film Festival

The main theme for this year's festival will be the Cuban Revolution, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The festival runs from November 1-22, 2009.

Greg Dawes To Give Invited Lectures in Chile

FLL professor Greg Dawes has been invited by the Catedra Pablo Neruda at the University of Chile, to conduct a series of conferences around the figure of Pablo Neruda in October. In Santiago, Dr. Dawes will be speaking at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at The Chascona, one of Neruda's former houses. There, as well as in the house-museum of Isla Negra, Dr. Dawes will be talking about "Neruda before the crisis of 56." Meanwhile in La Sebastiana, another of Neruda's former houses, Dr. Dawes will talk about "Realism and the Avant-Garde in Neruda's Residencias."

Gregory Dawes is a professor of Latin American literature and culture here at the Department of Foereign Languages and Literatures and is the author of numerous studies on Latin American poetry from authors such as Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, Vicente Huidobro, Ernesto Cardenal and Mario Benedetti.

Dr. Dawes is also the editor of A Contracorriente, an electronic journal dedicated to academic and Latin American cultural studies. Dr. Dawes received his MA in Spanish from the University of Northern Iowa and his Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literature, focusing on Latin American literature, at the University of Washington.


Lindsey Johnson named winner of the Jane Mitchell/Manolita Buck Scholarship!

Congratulations to senior Lindsey Johnson (LTA), who received the Jane Mitchell-Manolita Buck Scholarship from the Foreign Language Association of NC (FLANC) during the annual business meeting in September.

The award is given to rising college seniors who are pursuing foreign language teacher education in North Carolina. Lindsey wants to become a foreign language teacher so she can open the minds of her students and challenge them to accept and gain awareness of a much larger world. Also, she feels that her experience during her semester in Spain has given her many rewards and personal strengths as a foreign language teacher. She understands culture shock and total immersion and will be able to give her students empathy toward the challenges of learning a new language. Lindsey is receiving $1000 tuition and free registration to the fall FLANC Annual Conference.


Call for Latino Videos

The 2009 Latin American Film Festival invites film makers, artists, students, and members of the community to send their videos (5 minute limit) to participate in the Latino Portrait project. Please read the call for submissions and complete the entry form. The deadline is October 15th, 2009.


The selected videos will be screened during the 23rd Latin American Film Festival which will take place in several cultural spaces of North Carolina region during the month of November 2009. The videos will enter the collection of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UNC-CH and Duke University. In addition a selection will be broadcasted by local TV.


5th Annual Spanish Sociolinguistics Conference

North Carolina State University is proud to sponsor the 5th Annual International Workshop on Spanish Sociolinguistics (WSS5) April 8-10, 2010. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished Professor of English. Topics based on original sociolinguistic research analyzing Spanish data or data from contact situations between Spanish and other languages will be given in 20 minute presentations and in a poster session. Papers and presentations will be delivered in Spanish and English.
