Minor in Spanish
The Minor in Spanish is available to students working toward any undergraduate major at NCSU. The Spanish minor consists of 15 credits starting at the FLS 202 level and must include at least 9 hours of credit taken at NC State or through a study abroad program offered by the NC State Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Please read everything on this page and the pages referred to below, before contacting the Spanish Minor Advisor with questions about the minor. Native speakers of Spanish are also eligible to complete a Spanish minor, but should consult with the Spanish Minor Advisor prior to declaring the minor.
Students should be appropriately placed into their first Spanish course at NCSU by following the Dept. of Foreign Languages and Literatures placement procedures (http://fll.chass.ncsu.edu/undergraduate/place.php).
Advising Central also provides a complete description of the Spanish minor. Note that in addition to the Minor Declaration Form which can be downloaded from the Advising Central or Dept. of Foreign Languages and Literatures Minors websites referenced above, Registration and Records now requires its own R&R Minor Declaration Form. (See link #7 on this page, labeled "Declare Minor".)
To declare a Minor in Spanish, complete both declaration forms and obtain your major advisor's signature on the yellow one. Submit the yellow declaration form to Dr. Mark Darhower, Coordinator of the Spanish Upper Division and Advisor of Spanish Minors. Current office hours can be found on Dr. Darhower's departmental home page. After meeting with Dr. Darhower, you will need to take the R&R Minor Declaration Form to the CHASS Dean's Office located at 106 Caldwell Hall (NOT to Registration and Records as is indicated on the form).
Toward the end of coursework in the Minor in Spanish (as soon as you register for the last course for the minor, or soon after you start the last course), students will need to complete an application in order to have the minor appear on their transcripts. To do this, consult Susan Navey Davis, FLL Dept. Director of Undergraduate Advising, to complete a Minor Application form. This can be done at any time as of registration for the last course in the minor up until the first week of your last semester at NCSU.
Note that coursework completed with "old" course numbers used prior to January 2009 (FLS 308, 310, 300, etc.) will still count toward your minor. If you are unclear on how the revised Spanish curriculum affects completion of your minor, contact Dr. Darhower.
See Dept. of Foreign Languages and Literatures Minors for further information about all language minors offered in the department.
