Requirements for admission to teacher education candidacy in French and Spanish:
If you are interested in earning a license to teach k-12 French or Spanish in the North Carolina schools, then the following information will be useful to you as early as your freshman year. While taking courses for your French or Spanish major, you can also take those classes necessary for a teaching license. Coursework
French or Spanish Teacher Education majors must complete all CHASS, General Education, and Major FL courses (http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/curricula/index.html ). In addition to the required courses for the major (French or Spanish), there are required courses for the Teacher Education curriculum:
1.ED 204 (+ co-requisite) Intro to 21st Century Teaching to be taken during your Sophomore year
2.EDP 304 Educational Psychology
3.PSY 376 Developmental Psychology
4.ELP 344 School and Society
5.ED 311 (+ ED 312 co-requisite) Classroom Assessment Principles and Practice
6.ECI 423 Methods for Teaching Foreign Languages to be taken the Fall of your senior year (4CR)
7.ECI 424 Student Teaching Practicum to be taken during the spring of your senior year (12 CR)

Please note:
· No more than nine hours of departmental required or elective courses may be obtained through "Credit by Examination."
· All teacher education majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad. Please be sure to visit the Study Abroad Office website. The Department offers several summer or semester programs.
· Free electives: Twelve hours of free electives outside the required courses in the French/Spanish Teacher Education Program. Students are encouraged to elect COM 110 or 112, ECI 416 (Teaching Exceptional Students in the Mainstream Classroom) ENG/FL 325 (Linguistic Awareness) or a beginning Foreign Language course outside the major. Freshmen are encouraged to take ED 100.
· ESL add-on is an option for any French/Spanish Teacher Education student.
· A grade of C or better is required in all of the professional and French/Spanish major courses, as well as all education courses (with the exception of ED 204, which is a B). The minimum GPA required for admission to the Methods and Student Teaching courses is 2.500 overall and 2.500 in the French/Spanish major.
· All French and Spanish Teacher Education majors are required to complete Professional Development Workshops throughout the course of their study here at NC State. Semester schedules can be found at http://ced.ncsu.edu/licensureaccreditation/professional-development
Gateways for Teacher Education
There are two important gateways in the teacher education program for which you need to plan ahead: admission to teacher education candidacy and admission to the Professional Semester.
1. Admission to Teacher Education Candidacy (ATC): automatically granted after completion of the requirements listed below:
- successful completion of freshmen English and mathematics course requirements
- successful completion of the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in Reading, Mathematics, and Writing of the PRAXIS Exam*
- junior status (60 or more semester hours)
- admission to a teacher education curriculum (French or Spanish)
- a GPA of 2.50 or higher on all courses taken at NC State
- passing of “Intro to 21st Century Teaching”(ED 204) with a grade of B or better

2. Admission to the Professional Semester: In the spring of your junior year, you will complete an application for the professional semester (http://ced.ncsu.edu/licensure/professional-semester ), as well as an OPI-c. All coursework must be successfully completed by the end of the fall semester of your senior year, prior to student teaching.
Licensure
In order to apply for a NC Teaching Certificate, you must successfully complete the undergraduate French or Spanish Teacher Education program, successfully complete student teaching, and successfully complete each piece of evidence (1-6). The College of Education uses the SAGE program found in MyPack Portal as a way for students to keep up with their gateways and to submit their pieces of evidence online. There are six standards that must be met with evidence:
- Content Knowledge, Breadth – submit a transcript or Praxis II scores
- Content Knowledge, Depth – submit paper from FLF/FLS 492 and completed rubric
- Pedagogical and Professional Knowledge Skills and Dispositions – Unit Plan from student teaching portfolio
- Pedagogical and Professional Knowledge Skills and Dispositions – LEA Certificate of Capacity from Student Teaching Practicum
- Positive Impact on Student Learning – Assessments from Student Teaching unit
- Leadership and Collaboration – SIP project from ELP 344 and certificates of attendance to Professional Development workshops

FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM K-12 GOALS & OBJECTIVES:
Program goals and objectives are based on the NC Professional Teaching Standards, National Standards for Foreign Languages, and the 21st Century Skills. Additionally, the program follows the conceptual framework from the College of Education, LEAD SERVE.
Elements focus on the four forms of knowledge: general pedagogy, content-specific pedagogical strategies, content or discipline knowledge, and knowledge of the context of education, including foundations, historical perspectives and school settings.
