Plans of Study


General Information

  1. Students need to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours for the MA, including 18 hours at the 500-level of FLF or FLS courses.
  2. FL541 is required of all MA students. (FLS/FLS 592 no longer required)
  3. FLS502 is required of all Spanish MA students.
  4. FL_507 is required of all Graduate Teaching Assistants.
  5. Students may take up to 6 hours of 400-level courses as part of their Masters degree course work. These courses must be in areas other than the student's major field of study (FLF or FLS), and must be approved by the Director of Graduate Programs.
  6. Students must have a minimum of 24 credit hours from NC State (including inter-institutional course work).
  7. FL_592 and FL_595 may be taken multiple times if the topics are distinct.
  8. FLF630 / FLS675, FLF675 / FLS675 and FLF688 / FLS688 are offered each semester as needed.
  9. Not all possible graduate courses that will count toward the MA are included herein; students may take curriculum-specific graduate courses in Curriculum and Instruction, courses in Linguistics, World Literature, History, MALS, a Spanish Linguistics focus, etc.

FLF/FLS 675


  • You must have a minimum of 18 hours in FLS or FLF courses (content in the specialty).
  • Generally, FLF/FLS675 is taken during the last semester in conjunction with the Culminating Project.
  • Consult with the Director of Graduate Programs or your faculty mentor prior to the registration period for each semester if you have questions about courses, etc. Email your list of courses, along with any you have already taken, to the Director of Graduate Programs, who will review and approve your list and then remove your registration hold for that semester.
  • This form can be used as a guide for your plan of work. Once you begin course work you can start working on your Plan of Work through the MyPack Portal. After you complete 18 hours and have selected your culminating project advisor you can submit the POW for approval.
  • The DGP will review and approve the plan once it is submitted.

FLF/FLS 675 - Action research project with dissemination of findings.



  • You must have a minimum of 18 hours in FLS or FLF courses (content in the specialty).
  • Generally, FLF/FLS675 is taken during the last semester as you complete your Culminating Project/Action Research Project.
  • This form is to be filled out online through the MyPack Portal, and submitted by the time you have earned 18 credit hours in the program.
  • Fill out the form in consultation with your faculty adviser.
  • The DGP will review and approve the plan once it is submitted.
