Plans of Study


General Information

  1. Students need to complete a minimum of 30 credit hours for the MA, including a minimum of 18 hours in their concentration (FLFFLS, or FL - TESOL) at the 500- or 600-level.
  2. FLS 502 and FLS 520 are required for the Spanish concentration.
  3. FLF 520 is required for the French concentration. 
  4. The TESOL concentration has 6 required core courses (FL 505/507 or 508*, 524, 527, 535, 536, 675).  
  5. FL 507 is required of all Graduate Teaching Assistants (French or Spanish).
  6. Students may take up to 6 hours of 400-level courses as part of their Masters degree course work. These courses must be in areas other than the student's major field of study (FLF, FLS or FL), and must be approved by the Director of Graduate Programs.
  7. Students must have a minimum of 24 credit hours from NC State (including inter-institutional course work). See this Transfer Credit page from the graduate school for information on transferring credit into the MA program.
  8. FLF/FLS 592 and FLF/FLS 595 may be taken multiple times if the topics are distinct.
  9. FLF/FLS/FL 630, FLF/FLS/FL 675, AND FLF/FLS/FL 688 are offered each semester as needed.
  10. Some additional courses or areas to consider: Curriculum and Instruction, courses in English Linguistics (ENG 523/524/525/527/528/533,) World Literature, History, Philosophy MALS, a Spanish Linguistics focus, FLP401, or ESL (FL 524/527/535/536)
  11. You will meet with the Director of Graduate Programs, each semester to review your progress and your plans going forward. Prior to that meeting, review the courses being offered for the next semester, add to your GPOW the courses you plan to take. If everything is in order with your plan and progress your registration hold will be removed and you you will be able to enroll in courses.
  12. The forms below can be used as a guide for your plan of work. Once you begin course work you can start working on your Plan of Work through the MyPack Portal. After you complete 18 hours and have selected your culminating project advisor you can submit the POW for approval.
  13. The DGP will review and approve the plan once it is submitted.

*Students may not receive credit for both FL 505 and FL 507. TESOL students must take at least one of the following: FL 505/507 or FL 508. Students may take both FL 505/507 AND FL 508 for credit. 

Dual Concentrations

You can complete concentrations in two of the three areas offered (French, Spanish, TESOL). You will need 18 hours in each of the two concentrations (36 hours total; for example, 18 hours of FLS Spanish and 18 hours of FL (TESOL); TAships are for a maximum of two years/four semesters). You will receive one diploma but your transcript will show both concentrations. Your primary concentration would coincide with the language TAship to which you apply. You submit oral and written samples for both concentrations.

FLF/FLS 675 - Action research project with dissemination of findings.



  • You must have a minimum of 18 hours in FLS or FLF courses (content in the specialty).
  • Generally, FLF/FLS 675 is taken during the last semester as you complete your Culminating Project/Action Research Project.
  • Fill out the form in consultation with the Director of Graduate Programs, and then use this form as your guide to update and save your Graduate Plan of Work each semester through the MyPack Portal. Submit your plan of work for approval by the DGP prior to the start of your final semester in the program.
