Let's Work Together
This year's recipient of the ESL Education Award is Katee Finegan, an elementary education major from Chapel Hill, NC. Katee not only excelled in all ESL Add-On courses and her ESL student teaching, but she also helped spread the word about the program. Thanks to her enthusiastic recruiting efforts, the number of ESL Add-On candidates quadrupled. When asked why the ESL Add-On program was important to her, she stated the following: "I have learned so much more about culturally responsive teaching, lowering the affective filter, and English phonics than I could have ever imagined. Every teacher is an English teacher, but ESL teachers go one step further. ... ESL teachers not only support the students, but also provide continued support to the staff. ...As I begin my career, I want to start as a classroom teacher in a school with a large population of non-native English speakers. I want to use my ESL training to better serve my students and to also support my fellow staff with my knowledge and expertise."
Congratulations, Katee! We wish you all the best.
