Julia Wood Skinner Scholarships
In 2004 Julia Wood Skinner died in Raleigh at the age of 87. During her life she traveled frequently, especially to visit the great opera houses and beautiful gardens in Europe, opera and gardening being her two passions. During the last two decades of her life, she took no fewer than 45 classes in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures in French, German, Italian, and Russian — many classes she took more than twice. When she died, she left Foreign Languages & Literatures a bequest and with that money we endowed the Julia Wood Skinner Scholarships in her name which are given each year to the outstanding student in each one of the four languages she had pursued here.
Each of the awards carries a cash prize of $200.
The winners are selected by the faculty of the particular language.
